Important SEO Tips to Help Your Business

By Amparo Dillon

Local search engine optimization has been in use for a long time. Below are some tips to help you use local searches to build your business.

One thing you can do to get as much as you can from local searches is to make sure you're listed with the big names in the industry. Of course this means Google Maps and Yahoo! Local. Listing with these huge names should be your first priority before you go on to something else. If you can list with them, the rest is downhill because the search engines and human searchers will always know where to find your website. If you think that listing with Google Maps is hard, think again. You simply fill out a tiny form and then they'll either use your phone or email to have you verify your identity. Once you're verified, all it takes is a short waiting period of a few weeks for you to see yourself listed in the local searches. You should expect to find the same with Yahoo!, except you don't have to verify anything with them. Yahoo! will even allow you to design your business listing to your liking. The plus point here is that the approval process is quick and doesn't take weeks, unlike Google. Don't ever forget that technique, as that can take you further than any other tip you'll learn in reaching out to those you're trying to target.

You need to have multiple landing pages for different locations. When it comes to a local site, it won't help you to have multiple listings for one location, but if you have more than one location, you can target each one. The crucial point is that each separate location must have its own unique landing page that is obviously about the business in that specific place. It's not a good SEO practice, however, to send local traffic for several different locations to one home page or landing page. Dedicated landing pages work in your favor because they ensure that people searching for you will know exactly who and where you are. Even though this might look like a simple thing, it does matter.

It is also a good idea to try to list your business with the Yellow Pages and other directories like them online. YellowBook.com, YelloPages.com and SuperPages.com are all good directories. YellowPages.com, for example, offers businesses free listings online and they get more than one hundred million searches every month. On the other hand SuperPages.com supplies its listing to big portals such as About.com and MSN. Their listing is free but is very basic.

In conclusion, local SEO is the way to go if you want more exposure, period.
