How to Set Up a PPC Campaign Correctly

By Denise Hyde

PPC (Pay Per Click) Advertising is shrouded in urban legend and some of the things said about it seem to be true and false at the same time. The reason that the contradictions seem so prevalent has a lot to do with whoever is actually doing the speaking. Advertisers who can't get the system to work for them often see their experiences as the only truths. When in reality, there were reasons for their failures that they simply did not take the time to figure out. This is why all you hear from them are negative untruths about how the system is unfair and too expensive, etc. Making money with PPC is possible...after you've gone through the learning curve and learned how to properly stay on track.

Gone are the days when you could make a quick squeeze page and capture optins. If you have any expectations of doing PPC advertising, then you should not even try slipping a squeeze page by them. Oftentimes it is preferred to learn from the wisdom of people who have been doing this. If you want to make a twenty page site, then that is fine so it is up to you. What you will want to do is make sure that you do not look like you are shoving the optin box in their faces.

If you are totally new to PPC, then you will learn about negative keywords. Those are original to PPC advertising. They are keywords that will prevent your ad from displaying. Negative keywords are useful because they will save you money and increase your conversion rate. An increased conversion rate will result in an reduced CPC. You will not lose as much cash when this happens. So, do not leave them out of your ad groups. Don't forget that you have to put them into their place. You will want to use negative keywords because there will be people who want information, but are not buying any products.

As a new PPC advertiser, try not to be so impatient. If you are rushing to get live and make money, then you will usually make errors in judgment. When you see this occur, you will start paying out more money and mess up on a lot of steps. When your campaign is finally live, you have to give it some time and obtain good information. Always look at your campaign numbers at least twice a day. If something bad goes wrong, you will know about it.

You cannot go into PPC advertising without a solid grasp of the fundamentals of what needs to be done. If you have a PPC ad that is converting, then you can always modify your landing page if it is not working well. An effective PPC campaign will be relevant from the top to the bottom when they end-up on your landing page. Google tracks just about everything including how long people stay on your site.
