How CASS Certification Works In Mail Delivery

By Elinor Tran

CASS stands for Coding Accuracy Support System. This is a unique mailing strategy started by United States Postal Service to ease mail delivery. The program started in 1980. Cass certification was extended to mail forwarding firms in the country to help in efficient and fast delivery of mails.

The significance of this program is that it aids business mailers to process the mails. One huge benefit the system gives is that mailing companies gets work sharing assistance for each post. The sharing formula began in 1983; three years after the program took off.

The validating technique uses a verification system to check the information saved in database of USPS with the data stored in mailing forwarding firms. The aim is to compare the two databases for consistency and reliability of information. AMS CD-ROM is relied in this verification process.

The evaluation techniques include USPS office checking whether the information stored within the mailing company database is the same with the ones in system. It checks for accuracy and consistency of data supplied. If inaccuracies are detected, the mailing companies are notified. The consistency determines whether the mails are deliverable or not. The system demands that the mailing companies renew the process every six months. This is besides updating the software every year.

Are their advantages for the participating firms? The response is affirmatively. This procedure helps the participating firms to save five cents for each mail that goes through it. The five cents reward began in 2006. This helps the mailing organizations to send mails in more efficient way.

However, there are corrective actions against mailing firms not enlisted in the cass certification program. Such firms are charged First Class mail delivery rates. Businesses that embrace it keep at least five hundreds dollars for each ten thousand mails processed. This is a reward for participating firms while defaulting firms pay more. This has fastened mail processing and delivery across the country.
